The mystery of the sunken island and its advanced society certainly proved too enticing for the explorers, occultists and theosophists who took up the mantle. In fact, some believers and even non-believers think they are the same. The platforms on which the statues rest ahu are described by Churchward as being "platform-like accumulations of cut and dressed stone", which were supposedly left in their current positions "awaiting shipment to some other part of the continent for the building of temples and palaces". His knowledge remained incomplete, as the available tablets were mere fragments of a larger text, but Churchward claimed to have found verification and further information in the records of other ancient peoples. His writings attempt to describe the civilisation of Mu, its history, inhabitants, and influence on subsequent history and civilisation. He was a tea planter in Sri Lanka before coming to the US in the s. Was the lost continent of Mu based in fact or in the creative extrapolations of a liberal mind? Unlike Le Plongeon, however, Churchward focused his research in India where, he claimed, he had found ancient clay tablets kept by a high-ranking priest, containing writings in a lost language that only he and two other people could read. Undeterred and conflating what he thought was a story of a lost land with the myth of Atlantis, Le Plongeon decided that his Mu had been a continent peopled by an advanced civilization that had, in ancient times, sunk into the Atlantic Ocean. Heindel claims humans existed at this time, but humans had the power to shape-shift. In the case of Mu, the continent was said to have sunk Atlantis-style in a day and night of catastrophe.

A clue to how this feat was achieved are crystal basalt columns discovered at the bottom of the lagoon near Temwen Island and on the shores of other islets in the area, which would suggest that the stones were transported by raft. With his studies of the subject, he entertained the belief that all megalithic artworks worldwide originated from Mu.
